The Technology behind Curv®
In a unique and patented process, highly drawn thermoplastic tapes are heated under pressure to selectively melt the outside of the tapes, bonding the tapes together and resulting in a composite with strong molecular continuity between the phases. In short, the material properties are enhanced through molecular orientation, resulting in "self-reinforcement".
How Curv® is Made
Curv® is a thermoplastic composite in which highly drawn polypropylene tapes are bonded together in a matrix of the same material. The process begins with slitting tapes from an extruded polypropylene film. The drawing, or stretching process, is what gives the tapes their exceptionally high stiffness and strength. The tapes are woven into a strong fabric with balanced properties in both directions.
The final part of the process feeds multiple layers of fabric into a specially designed double belt press, under precise temperature and pressure control. Here the surface of every tape in the fabric is partially melted to create a matrix to bond the remaining tapes into a composite structure. After cooling, the consolidated composite sheet is slit to the required width, cut to length or rolled according to customer needs.
The precisely controlled, yet flexible production line allows the incorporation of additional materials (e.g. glass or aramid fabrics) during the manufacturing of Curv® to create hybrid materials with special properties. The process also can apply different surface finishes to the composite such as colored films, textured surfaces and surface films to promote adhesion or painting, etc. The production line may also be used for toll manufacturing of other materials where precise control of temperature and pressure is required.
